Sushi all around the world

Sushi Drought

I went to Las Vegas over the Thanksgiving holiday. I had been dreaming about all the excellent sushi I was going to eat and was so looking forward to it. Can you believe I didn’t get a single piece of sushi during the entire 5 days I was there? I can’t believe it either. My motto has always been “have sushi will travel” and also “when on travel have sushi.’

Have sushi, will travel

My failure to sushi during this trip caused me to reminisce about my sushi travel adventures. I recall with fondness the rolling sushi bar I stumbled upon in Amsterdam; the sushi – with red wine of course – that I frequently enjoyed while living in Paris; and the very strange London sushi restaurant  a classmate took me to – everyone was very trendy and dressed in black.

Sweet Home Alabama?

But there’s no place like home for interesting sushi travel adventures. Like the time I went to Nobu in New York and actually saw Robert DeNiro going in to check on things. Or the most unlikely place and time I’ve eaten sushi – Montgomery, Alabama in 1998. I don’t know who was more surprised – me, to find a bonafide sushi restaurant in the deep South (definitely shattered my stereotype), or the young Asian couple who waited  on me and the classmate I was visiting. The event must have been cosmic — immediately after finishing the meal and departing the restaurant the tornado sirens started sounding around the city. Go figure – I eat sushi in Alabama and it causes a tornado. (smile)
