Pregnancy and sushi

The other day I had lunch with my sushi partners-in-crime Lo Fro and Carlos the Jackal. We had an interesting discussion regarding the opinion that a woman should not eat sushi while pregnant. I had recently discovered a line of maternity clothing featuring text prominently placed over the belly shouting the second most important pregnancy countdown, e.g. “Nine Months to Sushi.”

Of course I think the warning against prego sushi is is just plain trickery, an evil conspiracy to make a pregnant woman even more uncomfortable and crazy during an already crazy and uncomfortable period.  So I started thinking back to my pregnancy days and tried to remember – did I cut out on the sushi in an attempt to protect the precious life growing inside of me?

No sushi? No way!

Puh-lease. No way I could do without sushi for 10 months. The last time I had caused a self-imposed sushi drought was in 1999 when I went on the Atkins diet. OMG was that hard. Giving up the sushi, that is, not the rest of the diet. I was so distraught when I learned how many carbs are in one cup of cooked rice and that I had to give up the sushi in order to be successful on the diet …. thank God there’s sashimi.

No sushi exile

Anyway, I digress. So having vowed never again to voluntarily place myself in sushi exile, I simply compromised during my pregnancy. No raw stuff -  just crab, shrimp, tamago (egg)and unagi (eel) sushi for me and my bambino. Well, maybe I snuck a couple pieces of yellowtail from time to time…  In any event, I’m happy to say the baby turned out healthy (and already loves sushi at age two – check out her video in the post about chopsticks) and I didn’t have to go without sushi for the duration of the pregnancy. Awesome!

There are some foods you should skip when you are pregnant. You want to skip deli meats because they can harbor bacteria that are bad for your baby. You also have to pass on sushi if the fish is raw. It’s ok to eat California rolls and cucumber rolls.

I can only hope that an entire pregnancy includes a stage one: not-at-all-pregnant and still drinking and gorging on sushi. Buying underwear for a friend is already a dicey prospect. Who am I to estimate the size of her ass?
