Chopstick etiquette when sharing sushi
This sushi etiquette tip has come up twice in recent sushi outings: the first time when I was enjoying Sushi Happy Hour at the AJ’s in Chandler, and more recently at the Post Inauguration Sushi Happy Hour at Cherry Blossom Noodle Cafe. On both occasions I learned that not everyone knows of the protocol so I figured I would share.
When you are sharing sushi with other sushi lovers from a common plate, which often happens with maki rolls and large combination platters, it is considerd impolite to reach for and select your piece of sushi with the same end of the chopsticks that you use to actually eat the sushi. You are supposed to use the opposite end to pick up the sushi and transfer to your own plate. You then turn the chopstics around and pick up the sushi to eat with the usual pointy ends.
