Sushi Lover Profile: Andrew
This week’s Sushi Lover-Boy is Andrew of Phoenix, Arizona.
How long ago did you begin eating sushi? Since 1993.
How were you introduced to sushi? From hanging out after class during college at the Sushi Den - mostly at the bar, but I began to sample the sushi too.
Did you like sushi the first time you tried it? Yes, I loved it! I was very surprised. I started with vegetarian sushi but became more and more adventurous.
How often do you/would you like to eat sushi? About once a month.
What is your favorite (or favorites) sushi? Ebi (shrimp), spicy tuna, and California roll (yes, I know California rolls are lame).
What is your favorite sushi restaurant? Why? Rise in Chicago. It’s a great place to eat sushi (very fresh) and people watch, especially in the summer when you can eat outside.
What is your most memorable sushi experience? Eating surf clam. It was the most disgusting thing I had ever tasted. I almost stopped eating sushi. Almost.
Where is the most unusual or exotic place/city you’ve eaten sushi? In the Shinjuku area of Tokyo, Japan. I was eating sushi at the top floor of a department store which had all these plastic models of sushi. We sat on the floor, which was cut out so that our feet hung into an open atrium. It was a very interesting experience.
Have you converted/introduced anyone to sushi? I introduced my friend Ann to sushi.
What was your score on the “Are you really a sushi lover” test?

Can you believe 0? I love sushi but I don’t think I’m an addict – yet.
Check all that apply – do you enjoy:
Maki (roll) sushi Yes
Temaki (handroll) sushi Yes
Chirashi (sashimi over a bowl of rice) Yes
Sashimi (slices of fish – no rice) Yes
Cooked sushi only – nothing raw No
Miso soup Yes, I LOVE miso and must have a bowl before eating sushi.
Edamame Yes
Any other comments: I think the key to good sushi is in the rice. I hate dried out rice. Bad rice ruins the sushi experience but great rice can make the sushi awesome.
