How long ago did you begin eating sushi? Eating it – nine years ago, really loving it – two years ago.
How were you introduced to sushi? Sushi was the preferred choice of food back in the dot com era. Not a big fan then. Not a big fan when living in Tokyo either for some odd reason. It just suddenly hit me after accidentally having it two times in a week back in Oslo. I couldn’t stop. Still can’t.
Did you like sushi the first time you tried it? Nope.
If not, when/how did you start to like it? When living in Japan I started to like it. Totally loving it – two years ago.
How often do you eat sushi? Three, four times a month. Sometimes much more… But I have to, I am on a mission!
How often would you like to eat sushi? I don’t think I could have it every day. Good sushi – maybe a couple of times a week.
What is your favorite (or favorites) sushi? I love aji nigiri, salmon both as sashimi and nigiri and I am very fond of shrimp tempura and soft shell crab maki as well.
What is your favorite sushi restaurant? Why? We went to this fabulous sushi bar in Studio City, LA in 2007 and I still think that is my favorite. The guys behind the sushi bar were friendly, fun and amazing to watch. And the sushi was spectacular.
What is your most memorable sushi experience? The first time my boyfriend wanted to show me something “special” and ordered ikezukuri. It did not end well. I left the sushi bar crying while the fish kept on moving on my plate and the fish in the fish tank in the front of us stared accusingly (and rightfully so) at my boyfriend and their soon to be dead comrade. (I know fish have to die for me to get my sushi, but make sure it is dead before served, OK?)
Where is the most unusual or exotic place/city you’ve eaten sushi? Gran Canaria – the sun is shining, the island is beautiful but the sushi is horrible. Some of the worst I have had. Were not even inspired to write about it on SOD, just want to forget it.
Have you converted/introduced anyone to sushi? How many people?
I want to believe I have made several people into sushi lovers – both by personally introducing them to it, and as the editor of Sushi or Death.
What was your score on the “Are you really a sushi lover” test?
