Downtown Phoenix is about to become an even cooler restaurant destination. After almost a year’s delay, Moira, the neighborhood’s first sushi/Japanese restaurant will open March 27 [today at 5 p.m.]. (It’s at 215 E. McKinley St., about a block and a half east of Matt’s Big Breakfast.)

The lengthy menu has six sections: soups, salads, izakaya (Japanese tavern) dishes, nigiri sushi/sashimi, makimono sushi rolls and hot plates.

The izakaya listings are particularly deep. Among the options are edamame shu mai for $6, and baked mussels, panko-crusted soft shell crab, tempura shrimp, and beef wrapped in grape leaves with a Vietnamese hoisin peanut sauce for $7.

The sushi offerings include all the standards, such as salmon and yellowtail for $5, and scallop, octopus, eel and mackerel for $6.

Nothing on the menu runs more than $14, and many of the items are less than $10. Beer, wine and spirits are also available. Check out the website at www.moirasushi.com.
