Escolar (called “white tuna”) is my favorite sushi. Excellent flavor and mouth-feel I don’t think I’ve ever had more than 6 oz at once, though, and I’ve never had it cooked (that I know of). I’ve never had any bad effects, though I was careful when I started eating it since I had read the warnings.

This drives me crazy because this fish doesn’t affect me in this way… and I eat LARGE portions!!! I’m talking 12 ounces in a sitting! Why does everyone else have to ruin it for me!!!

Have eaten it in sushi and other restaurants many times, and more than the 6 oz recommended portion at a time on more than one occassion, with no problems. Terrific mouthfeel as sushi, and a succulent fish when grilled. Not a problem for everybody, at least in normal portion sizes, and bans are silly. Why not ban milk and soft cheses, since for a significant portion of the population (perhaps 75% of the world population, my anglo self included) lactose produces different but equally upleasant gastrointestinal disturbances? Warnings are just good business practice and should be voluntary.

I tried escolar for the first time at a local restaurant. It was amazing!! I bragged about how great escolar was. Then the very next day I had orange oily poop. I was going to the bathroom every hour. It was gross!! I will never eat it again!

I ruined a perfectly good couch after eating grilled escolar! I’ve eaten it three times: the first time as sushi, with no problems; the second and third time I ate escolar it was a grilled portion of less than 6 oz. I think my body is developing an allergy or something because the second time I ate it I had a bit of “gastric distress” but nothing like the truly (physically and emotionally) nasty side-effects of my latest — and last — tryst with escolar. One ruined couch, pair of underwear and pajama-bottom later, I am trying to decide if I want to risk attending a Super Bowl party later today — ouch!

Furthermore, if you would like to try this fish and are in the Orange County area, please try HAVEN GASTROPUB up in orange. They are using the Escolar we sell and are have amazing reviews. The fish is a 5oz portion and people are falling in love with this fish all over again!
